Today’s “Vintage is Now” photo shows a series of Kim’s fun baby photos from the late 1960’s. These photos bring a smile to everyone that views them! They were framed in the 80’s elsewhere in very bold colors and it was time for a bit of updating.

We cut this six opening mat on our Wizard computerized matcutter. Kim chose a stylish ornate Larson Juhl frame with a bit of whimsy. We added an engraved plate with her name and the date. The matting choice is very neutral so whatever home decor colors might be popular, this project will look great.

“Vintage is Now” Day 17- Early 1900’s head shot and Ladies Business Card

Day 17 of Whispering Woods Gallery’s “Vintage is Now” series features a simple project that means a lot to me. This is an original photo of my grandmother Sophie with her calling card. Similar to a business card, a calling card announced your arrival when visiting. I feel honored to have this as it is a great reminder of my hard-working, determined grandmother.  It’s on display at Whispering Woods Gallery.

The Larson Juhl vintage style frame is perfect for the early 1900 period of the project. The open v-groove leads you from the photo to the calling card.  My choice was TruVue Museum Glass to protect from damaging UV light rays.

“Vintage is Now” Day 16-Grandparents~ Custom Framed To Be Remembered

A custom framed 1920’s wedding portrait.

This is one of the loveliest vintage wedding photos that we have framed. When Lisa of Philadelphia came in with this large original 1920’s photo, I knew that it would be special.  It was to be a  gift to her older sister.  Lisa did not know her grandparents but wanted it to be something that wold be loved for years to come.

Everything about her selection is neutral and timeless. She opted for TruVue Museum Glass and chose solid color core mats that don’t leave an obtrusive white line at the mat bevel. The Larson Juhl warm silver frame goes perfectly with the style of the photograph.

Lisa was extremely pleased and we think she looks like her grandmother-almost 100 years later!

“Vintage is Now” Day 15-Memories of Mom and Dad

Day 15 of Whispering Woods Gallery’s “Vintage is Now” series is a unique combination. We combined three photos into one frame for Bill of Newtown, Pa. In the center we see Bill’s parents wedding photograph from 1957 and 1930’s pony pictures of his mom and dad from different parts of Philadelphia.  Bill’s mother grew up in the Tacony section of Philadelphia and his father grew up in West Philadelphia.  Both photos are from the age of five years old.

On a side note, many of us have pony pictures of family. They look wonderful custom framed. We love Bill’s idea of combining them with his parent’s wedding photo.  To read more on pony photographs we found a book that you might want to read- A Pony in the Picture: Vintage Portraits of Children and Ponies,  by Victoria Randall. 

For this project we scanned the photos and digitally manipulated the color of the trio to look pleasing together. We sized them to make an interesting arrangement. New copies were generated for this framed piece. The double mat of solid core matboard complements the Larson Juhl Marais frame. We included a brass plate with Bill’s parents names and the year that they were married. Bill is happy to have this sweet reminder of his parents and their happy memories many years ago.

This is a photo from a 1952 wedding album. It was the sister of the bride and her husband. We scanned and printed a new copy for this project which hangs in our shop.

Welcome! Today’s “Vintage is Now” photo is from a 1952 wedding album. This was the matron of honor and sister of the bride and her husband. The photography is stunning showing the reflections in the mirror. We proudly display this in our shop.

The custom framing is a bit creative! It has curvy mat cuts in the solid color core matboard. The mat colors were carefully selected to blend with the tones in the photo.  The shimmery Larson Juhl frame is gutsy but works well. It also comes in silver and gold and is a best seller at Whispering Woods Gallery. The TruVue Museum glass invites you right into the photo.

“Vintage is Now” Day 13- A Vintage Postcard and Snapshot

Mom and Dad met in the late 1940’s on Chelsea Beach in Atlantic City, NJ.

Welcome to Day 13 of Whispering Woods Gallery’s “Vintage is Now” series. This custom framing project is a fun one! This goes back to the late 1940’s where my Mom and Dad met on Chelsea Beach in Atlantic City, NJ. It was after WWII and Atlantic City was the place to be. I have included a vintage postcard of the approximate same time period in the same place. The building in back of my parents is the Ambassador and it is the middle building in the postcard.

The framing is simple. I used a beachy light wood with a gray wash and solid core white rag mats. It was challenging to make choice that went with both pieces. I cut the mat on my Computerized Mat Cutter. The frame is by a Pennsylvania manufacturer.

This is a project that makes a great gift and can be delivered quickly.  I have thousands of fun vintage postcards in the shop and we just need you to supply the photograph. What a great gift for Mother’s Day, Father’s Day or graduation!

”Vintage is Now” Day 12-NY School for the Deaf photo and medals

“Vintage is Now” Day 12-NY School for the Deaf in Manhattan. This photo dates back to the early 1900’s. These are authentic medals, however we made a copy of the original photo to use in this project.  The young deaf man is wearing his medals on his jacket. Sad to say, the young man died in the flu epidemic of 1918, leaving a wife and two year old baby son. For many years, this hung in the residence of the son who lived until the age of 97.

One of my favorite touches is the open v-groove surrounding the photo. The style of the elegant silver frame is appropriate for the time period.

The New York School for the Deaf was founded in 1818 and still exists today in White Plains, NY. In 1892 this was the first school of any kind in the United States to add a military curriculum. The center medal was awarded for “Best Drill Officer.”

“Vintage is Now” Day 11-Four 1940’s Baby Photos

This little guy was so cute! Yes, he’s still cute! He recently found these when he downsized and had me reframe them for his new home. They had a little acid burn from the previous mat but all in all they were in good shape. The neutral mats and classic silver frame that he chose are perfect.

Baby photos make great meaningful wall decor.  Stop by and we are happy to give you some ideas for display.

“Vintage is Now” Day 10- A simple 1940’s snapshot

Day 10 of “Vintage is Now” features a candid snapshot of a mother and son in the 1940’s. It was taken in the backyard on a sunny day. It is honest. There was no primping or posing.   The subjects were immigrants who were grateful for everything.

This photo came from a “shoebox collection” of  photos.  Most families have a box or two of these.  Sometimes they  are a semi-glossy photo with cool deckled edges. Looking through a box of these is an adventure through the past.

The tone on tone white matting is simple. The matting design frames the image and draws your eye into the photo. We used a traditional frame that would have felt perfect in this home. The mom in the photo passed away in 1952, but we know that future generations will have a glimpse of a their family matriarch.

“Vintage is Now” Day 9-Purple Heart Certificate, Photo and Medals

We won’t forget this soldier who was killed in action in Europe during WWII.

Day 9 of “Vintage is Now” is a sad one. We framed an original military photo with a Purple Heart certificate and medals all in one frame. Our young US soldier was killed in action on December 25, 1944 in Europe during the Battle of the Bulge.

This was a gift from a niece of the deceased to a nephew of the deceased.  She chose  a tasteful Larson Juhl Biltmore frame. Although it does not show in the photo, the frame is deep enough to accommodate the thickness of the medals.  We used Museum glass and solid color core matboard. The mat opening around the medals was embellished with a classic corner from our computerized matcutter. We were honored to win a Larson Juhl Design Star award for this several years ago.

Custom framing keeps our memories alive. Thanks to all that served our Country. We won’t forget you.

“Vintage is Now” Day 8-Shore memories with snapshots, souvenirs, and a map

403EF7B7-A932-49FE-8010-607495BA3FACToday’s “Vintage is Now” project is a collage of family memories. It was featured in Picture Framing Magazine in 2017. It consists of vintage snapshots from the 1950’s, vintage postcards, a map, and some Jersey Shore souvenirs of the same time period. On this piece we made copies of our original 1950’s photos. We matted them with custom hand embossed matboard in fun summer colors. Combining vintage postcards and photographs makes an interesting composition.

“Vintage Is Now” Day 7-1940’s NYC Copacabana Club souvenir photo

Our Day 7 “Vintage is Now” photo goes back to WWII and the Copacabana Club in New York City. This was enlarged from a souvenir keepsake taken by a professional photographer who went from table to table taking photos.  We enlarged this and it hangs in a dining room. The handsome couple have passed away but are remembered every day.

Whispering Woods Gallery showed creativity in the mat cutting. Neutral mats draw you into the very interesting photo. The elegant vintage warm silver frame is perfect. We never tire of looking at this custom framed photograph.
